If I had $810…

Lupin The Box - TV & the Movie - I would buy this lovely limited edition DVD box set from Vap. All three Lupin the Third TV series (that’s 228 episodes for those playing along at home) are included in the set along with Mamo, Cagliostro, and Babylon.

But that is not what makes this really attractive; it is using the HD mastered video from the recent Japanese satellite broadcasts and DD5.1 soundtracks. Throw in a booklet which is likely to be filled with some cool artwork and Otsuka Yasuo doing the box artwork, and I am drooling over this.

Haven’t had a chance to properly translate the announcement, but a statement at the bottom leads me to believe that the HD/DD5.1 remasters only extend to the TV episodes. Considering the previous, non-remastered TV series DVD box sets alone totaled up to ~166,000¥/1400$US, this is a limitation I can live with. Now if I could only convince Jm that spending $810 on DVDs is a good bargain…

VAP will probably re-release the remasters individually like they did with the dvds for the boxsets. The real question is whether these will be the versions originally released on dvd, or the ones altered by TMS for U.S. audiences. Anyway, I just hope this means they’ll bring back Golgo 13, because it’s been discontinued. Oh, and if you want to convince her it’s a good bargain, just let her know about the pre-order for Legend of Galactic Heroes. ^_-

@Daniel

I'm not sure they will release the remasters as individual DVDs, at least not as ordinary DVDs. This might be the last attempt to squeeze some money out of the original format before trying to sell the remastered individuals on HD-DVD/Blu-ray.

As for releasing the altered versions in Japan, the probability of that happening is extremely close to zero. It wouldn't make sense on so many levels.

Well Tomino did screw with the Gundam music, so it's not impossible. Hell, there's at least one show in Japan which doesn't have the original singers on dvd. (Akazukin Cha Cha.)Agree w/ you on the likely release pattern for the show, though. Oh well, at least you got the first import of Cagliostro w/ Shimomoto's sig to boot.
